What Is CNC Machining?

CNC (computer numerical control) machining is a computerized manufacturing process that uses computer software programs that dictate the movement of machinery and tools. One or multiple metal fabrication machines, such as a metal laser cutter, are connected to a computer with CNC software (such as SOLIDWORKS) that translates a CAD (computer aided design) model into a physical product with great precision.

In times past, every machine involved in metal fabrication had to be manually operated. This increases the incidence of injuries, raises costs for the metal shop, is more time consuming and generally less efficient.

A CNC machine, on the other hand, is a motorized maneuverable tool that is highly automated instead of manually operated. Machines are connected to a computer which directs their movement, creating a product with minimal human interaction and a higher level of precision.

Basic Steps of CNC Machining

There are three basic steps involved in CNC machining:

  1. Designing a CAD model

  2. Converting the CAD file to a CNC program

  3. Setting up and executing the machine operation

First, a 3D or 2D CAD model must be created in a computer program with the exact dimensions and properties of the desired final part or product. Then, the CAD model is run through CAM software (computer aided manufacturing) to generate the code that will be sent to the CNC machine to control the actions and tooling. The programming language normally used for this is called “G-code,” and it controls when, where, and how the machines will move to form the object.

Then, after the CNC machine is set up to operate and the code is loaded, the program will execute. The machine follows the instructions to create the finished product to very precise specifications.

Sattler Sheet Metal Fabrication

Our shop uses CNC machining to fabricate an endless variety of 3D machine parts, signs and art, and metal products from 2D sheet metal. The CNC laser cutting machine we utilize in our shop is an incredibly fast and precise process that creates beautiful finished products with high accuracy.
